COLD LAKE - Holy Cross Elementary is more than just a school to Valerie Hanson, it’s a home away from home.
Hanson will be shifting from vice principal to principal in the new school year, a position Hanson is familiar with.
Over her 26 years in education, Hanson has served as principal, vice principal, teacher, and in district office with a focus on early learning, structured literacy, and Indigenous education.
In her new role, Hanson intends to continue to build on the work that has already been done over the years, utilizing the skills she has gained while working in district office, and sharing it with the staff and students at the school.
Prior to joining Lakeland Catholic School Division, Hanson worked as an educator in Saskatchewan, and was enthusiastic when an opportunity to work within a Catholic school environment opened up in Cold Lake.
“I grew up in Catholic schools in Regina and always saw myself teaching in Catholic schools,” she said. “It was what I always wanted, because that was home for me - it is where I grew up.”
Working in a Catholic school environment allows her to be her true self, Hanson added.
”We can pray together, we can celebrate our faith - when I am in a Catholic school, I am free to be who I am.”
Hanson thanked outgoing Principal Michelle Kaminski for her years serving the school and district.
“She is an incredible leader and I am truly grateful for her time with Lakeland Catholic. She will be greatly missed,” Hanson said.
She continued, “I am eager to continue fostering an environment where our students can thrive academically and spiritually, and am looking forward to working collaboratively with our dedicated staff and families.”
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
